Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School is now accepting enrolments.
Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School’s partnership with the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF) has continued to flourish in 2023. We started the 2023 academic school year with 11 boarding students receiving AIEF scholarship funding, comprising of one Year 12, one Year 11, three Year 10, four Year 9, one Year 8 and one Year 7 student. The Indigenous students are an important part of the fabric of our school, and especially Cribb House, the home for the boarding students.
This year saw many memorable moments involving the AIEF Scholarship Student cohort. This included the Indigenous Dadi group participating in a dance performance at our Harmony Week assembly, and also the individual stall this group held on our Open Day, which allowed them to paint the faces of future students and educate them on Indigenous culture. During NAIDOC week, the AIEF students also spent time in the junior school participating in cultural activities with the junior boarders. A further highlight for the school included hosting several Japanese tour groups in the boarding house. These students were delighted to learn about the richness of Indigenous Australian culture from the AIEF students.
Throughout the year, our Team Tuition continued to provide tuition and mentoring to the AIEF Scholarship Students. The tutors provided academic tuition, mentoring support, and a study skills program. This additional tuition has proven to be effective with six of the eligible nine girls receiving academic improvement awards.
Another highlight for the AIEF Scholarship Students in Years 10 and 12 included Career Sessions which allowed them to explore future career pathways and develop a career plan. One student, Pauleeja, successfully completed her Deadly Start Certificate 3 in Health Services course and was offered early acceptance into the Australian Catholic University to study a Bachelor of Nursing. Another student, Marley, continues to excel in sporting activities. This year she reached the 2nd phase of trials to be part of the 2032 Rugby 7’s Olympic team. In addition to this, Marley will be travelling through Europe playing rugby league in 2024.
A special mention must go to the School’s Pathways Adviser, Angelica, who has worked closely and extensively with the scholarship recipients during AIEF facilitated activities. Angelica has provided excellent emotional support, academic support, career advice and pathway options for the girls throughout the year and has been a valuable support to Cribb House staff.
Moving into 2024, Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School has organised for the current AIEF Year 10 students to complete pathways programs, including a Certificate in Business, Certificate in Construction and Certificate in Health Services. This will provide additional opportunities in their senior years. As a school community, we look forward to continuing our partnership with AIEF to achieve our shared commitment of creating positive outcomes for Indigenous students.
Your investment will help more Indigenous students access world-class education and careers.
Back home, it’s cool not to care… but it’s cool to be smart here.
