On Friday, 29 June four Indigenous students visited BHP Billiton for a careers experience visit. As part of the AIEF Pathways Program, BHP Billiton also hosted a lunch for the four Indigenous AIEF scholarship students.
The students from the Pilbara region in Western Australia are studying in Years 10 to 12 at boarding schools in Perth, supported by AIEF in partnership with BHP Billiton.
The students met with members of BHP Billitons Indigenous employment team, who answered questions about employment opportunities and the range of careers available at BHP Billiton, which is one of the world’s leading iron ore producers. They also visited the companys Apprentice Centre at Welshpool to gain an understanding of trades-based post-school opportunities available. The students toured the facilities and saw apprentices working on the mechanics of heavy vehicles from the Pilbara.
After an afternoon of exploring future pathways, the students left with a better idea of the career paths they want to pursue and were highly motivated to pursue the path towards achieving them.
