AIEF students in Years 10 and 11 recently took part in a combined Learn It! Live It! Work Readiness Workshop and Tertiary Experience Day in Sydney. The day was hosted by the University of Technology, Sydney and 30 students attended from Partner Schools across New South Wales.
During the first half of the day, students took part in a series of workshops designed to develop their interpersonal skills with sessions on culture and identity, emotional intelligence, and strengths and values. Guest speaker Luke Carroll spoke about his life growing up in Sydney, the strong influence of his mum, and how much he values education. He also spoke about his career as an actor in film, television and on stage, and the importance of resilience and motivation.
After lunch, students had a tour of the UTS city campus to gain insight into what to expect from life as a university student. Meeting with staff from the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education, students learned about course application processes, alternative entry pathways and accommodation options. AIEF Tertiary Scholar Mikasa Donald also met with students to discuss her first-hand experience studying at UTS and the support of AIEF in making the transition from school to university.
